Belgian manager Carl Hoefkens has reportedly agreed terms with Cairo giants Zamalek to take charge of the team until June 2025.
The Whites have been without a manager since the departure of Juan Carlos Osorio last November, with Motamed Gamal leading the team on a temporary basis since then.
The newly elected board, led by Hussein Labib, had revealed that they are looking for a foreign manager to lead the team, and it looks like they identified Hoefkens as the man for the job.
According to Belgian publication Le Soir, Hoefkens reached an with Zamalek, with the ‘official announcement expected shortly’.
The report added that Carl Hoefkens will sign a contract for one and a half years and will bring two assistants, one for technical aspects and the other for physical training. He also wants to bring a goalkeeping coach, but Zamalek’s board is against this.
Hoefkens, 45, started his managerial career just in 2022, when he led Club Brugge for 27 games during the 2022-23 season, helping them win the Belgian Super Cup and reach the UEFA Champions League round of 16, before getting sacked in December.
A spell with Standard Liège followed this season, but again after just 22 games, Hoefkens was sacked once again last December and has been jobless since then.
Hoefkens did however have a successful career as an assistant manager, having worked under Philippe Clement & Alfred Schreuder at Club Brugge, when the team won the 2021/22 Belgian league and Super Cup.
As a player, Hoefkens was a defender, and played for several Belgian clubs, most notably Lierse and Club Brugge as well as having two stints in England with Stoke City and West Brom between 2005 to 2009.
He also represented Belgium 22 times, scoring one goal against Turkey, back in 2006.
