Egypt legend Ahmed Hassan has revealed he turned down an opportunity to join Hossam Hassan’s coaching staff at the national team.
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) made a surprising decision to appoint Hossam Hassan as head coach on Tuesday despite claiming they were looking for a foreign manager hours earlier.

Hossam is now set to take charge of Egypt ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers along with his brother Ibrahim, who was named technical director.
Hours after the news, Mohamed Youssef turned down Egypt’s national team Administrative Manager position, and Ahmed Hassan revealed he has followed suit.
“I was offered to be part of the new coaching staff for the Egyptian national team, but I refuse any dealings now in any form or subject at present,” the four-time AFCON winner said.

“Anyone who wants to serve the national team anywhere, and I am one of the players who have achieved and participated in many tournaments with the Egyptian national team, but the general atmosphere is unhealthy.
“Decisions were issued by the EFA, then we woke up to completely different matters.
“Hossam Hassan is of great value and I am not talking about that, but how can a decision be made to appoint a general coach (Mohamed Youssef) before there is a head coach, who was supposed to be a foreigner as announced by the Football Association.”
“A year and a half ago, Hazem Emam stated that the next head coach would be a foreigner, and then we were surprised that Gamal Allam announced the appointment of Ehab Galal as Egypt manager, and after a month he was dismissed.
“No one learns from mistakes, and every day there are changes, leaks, and different ideas.”
