Former Portugal international Nuno Gomes has defended Egypt’s manager Rui Vitoria after the Pharaohs draw with Mozambique.
Egypt rescued a late point as they drew 2-2 with Mozambique in their opening game of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Sunday.
Due to Egypt’s poor performance and delayed substitutions, manager Rui Vitoria was heavily criticised by fans and pundits alike.
Benfica legend Nuno Gomes rushed to the defence of Rui Vitoria, stressing that his compatriot has what it takes to put the Pharaohs back on track.
“I believe that the result is saddening for the Egyptian people because the game was between a team with a history and a high-ranking and another less esteemed,” Nuno Gomes told OnTime Sports.
“Sometimes, a team expected to win the title may stumble, but I think the team should focus now on the next match against Ghana.
“Rui Vitoria’s job will be tough, but he has extensive experience and knows how to deal with these situations.
“Everyone expected Egypt to win, but what happened is that the team did not perform in the way it should have, and sometimes results are not the best.”
