Egypt’s legendary striker Hossam Hassan has been appointed as the Pharaohs’ head coach following Rui Vitoria’s departure.
The Egyptian Football Association made the announcement today following an emergency meeting that took place on Tuesday.
The news comes in contrast to what the EFA itself declared days ago when revealed that Mohamed Youssef was appointed as interim head coach until while they ‘search for a foreign head coach’.
Moreover, as usual, Hossam’s twin Ibrahim Hassan, has been appointed as the director of the Egyptian national team, but the EFA has not revealed the rest of the coaching staff names.
Hossam Hassan had just taken charge of Modern Future a few days ago, but the club agreed to release him from his contract to take over the national team.

The 57-year-old will become the fifth domestic coach to lead the Egyptian national team in the new century after Hassan Shehata, Shawky Gharieb, Hossam El-Badry, and Ehab Galal.
He started his managerial career back in 2008 with Al Masry, before going on to coach Telecom Egypt, Zamalek, Ismaily, Misr El-Makkasa, Ittihad of Alexandria, Pyramids, and Smouha.
Hassan’s only managerial stint with a national team came in 2013 with Jordan, when he led the team through a historic 2014 World Cup qualifiers, before losing in the final stage against Uruguay in the AFC–CONMEBOL play-off.
Hassan is Egypt’s all-time top scorer and won three Africa Cup of Nations with the Pharaohs, 1986, 1998, and 2006, as well as the 1992 Arab Nations Cup, and the 1987 All-Africa Games.
On the club level, Hassan came through the youth ranks of Al Ahly and played also for Greek club PAOK, Neuchâtel Xamax, Al Ain, Zamalek, Al Masry, Tersana, and Ittihad of Alexandria.
His first game in charge with the Pharaohs will come in the Winsunited Cup in the United Arab Emirates during the international break in March.
The Winsunited Cup will witness the participation of four teams, namely Egypt, Tunisia, Croatia, and New Zealand.
