The Syrian Football Federation has officially announced the extension of Argentine coach Héctor Cúper’s contract until the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
This announcement comes on the heels of Syria’s historic advancement to the Round of 16 in the 2023 AFC Asian Cup under Cúper’s leadership.
Cúper, who took charge of the Syrian national team in February 2023, has now entered into his fourth coaching venture with national teams. Alongside him, Egypt’s Mahmoud Fayez serves as the assistant coach, while Essam El-Hadary handles the role of goalkeeper coach.
Under Cúper, Syria has played 13 matches, securing victories in four, drawing four, and suffering defeats in five.
The extension of Cúper’s contract underscores Syria’s commitment to continuity and stability as they strive for further success on the international stage.
The team commenced its quest for the 2026 World Cup with a win against North Korea (1-0) and a loss to Japan (0-5).
With Syria currently positioned third in their World Cup qualifying group, behind Japan and North Korea, the team aims to secure a place in the third stage of Asian qualifiers for the 2026 tournament.
