Nigeria keeper Stanley Nwabali has reportedly received threats not to return to South Africa after guiding his country to knock Bafana Bafana out of the AFCON.
Nwabali currently plies his trade at South African side Chippa United since October 2022, having joined them from Katsina Utd.
The 27-year-old keeper was put in an awkward position as he guarded his country against South Africa in the semi-finals of the 2023 AFCON.
Nwabali made crucial saves for the game to end in a 1-1 draw, before stopping two penalties during the shootout to send Nigeria through to the final.
Former Super Eagles international keeper Idah Peterside has revealed that Nawabli’s performance saw him receive threats from South Africans, warning the player not to go back to Chippa United after the end of the AFCON.
“The biggest problem we have had is that we have gotten some messages where people have sent messages to the goalkeeper, threatening him,” Peterside said.
“I hear some people are telling him not to come back to South Africa ‘since you didn’t want us to score.
“We have not heard of any violence, but just threats. They have been threatening him and threatening some people.”
