Zamalek’s veteran left-back Mohamed Abdelshafy has sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, the club has announced.
The 38-year-old injured his knee during the training session held at the subsidiary pitch of the 30 June Stadium.
Zamalek’s team doctor Mohamed Osama said: “Abdelshafy suffered a cruciate ligament tear after medical examinations he underwent recently.
“Abdelshafy underwent intensive medical examinations to determine the extent of the injury and to determine the appropriate treatment protocol.
“The player will travel to Germany in the coming days for consultation with a doctor and to undergo surgery, based on the decision of Hussein Labib, the club’s president, who made the decision.”
Abdelshafy had reversed his decision to retire at the start of the season and made eight appearances for the club this season.
The 2010 AFCON champion becomes the second Zamalek player to suffer an ACL injury after centre-back Mahmoud Hamdy El-Wensh.
